“Underground Images: School of Visual Arts Subway Posters, 1947 to the Present”
“Underground Images” is a selection of 52 posters from the SVA Archives. This exhibition represents a concise sampling of the myriad posters created at the School of Visual Arts for display in the vast New York City subway system.Arranged by decade this collection offers a glimpse of the College’s history and the array of its innovative design and illustration faculty. SVA initiated its subway campaign as an advertising and recruiting vehicle. Placed where millions of subway commuters see them every day, the posters have consistently produced a stream of inquiries and applications to study at the College.
The SVA subway posters serve to remind the public, even for a fleeting moment on the way to work, the importance of creativity and risk taking to leading a full life.
